শান্তিতে নোবেলজয়ী, বাংলাদেশি অর্থনীতিবিদ ড. মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসের প্রতি বাংলাদেশ সরকারের আচরণের বিষয়ে গভীর উদ্বেগ জানিয়ে চলতি বছরের মার্চ মাসে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার কাছে খোলাচিঠি লিখেছিলেন রাজনীতি, কূটনীতি, ব্যবসা, শিল্পকলা ও শিক্ষাক্ষেত্রের ৪০ জন বিশ্বনেতা। তাদের মধ্যে ছিলেন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সাবেক পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী হিলারি ক্লিনটন ও সাবেক ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট আল গোর, জাতিসংঘের সাবেক মহাসচিব বান কি মুন, আয়ারল্যান্ডের সাবেক প্রেসিডেন্ট মেরি রবিনসন, প্রয়াত মার্কিন সিনেটর এডওয়ার্ড এম কেনেডির ছেলে টেড কেনেডি জুনিয়রের মতো আন্তর্জাতিক খ্যাতিসম্পন্ন ব্যক্তিত্বরা।

উক্ত খোলাচিঠির ধারাবাহিকতায় এবার প্রধানমন্ত্রী বরাবর ১০০ জনেরও বেশি নোবেল বিজয়ী সহ ১৬০ জনেরও বেশি বিশ্বনেতা একটি নতুন চিঠিতে স্বাক্ষর করেছেন। তাদের মধ্যে রয়েছেন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সাবেক প্রেসিডেন্ট বারাক ওবামা ও সাবেক পররাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী হিলারি ক্লিনটন, পূর্ব তিমুরের প্রেসিডেন্ট হোসে রামোস-হোর্তা প্রেসিডেন্ট, আয়ারল্যান্ডের সাবেক প্রেসিডেন্ট মেরি রবিনসন, জাতিসংঘের সাবেক মহাসচিব বান কি মুনের মতো ব্যক্তিত্ব। উক্ত চিঠিতে স্বাক্ষরকারীদের একজন, রেজাল্টস অ্যান্ড সিভিক কারেজের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা স্যাম ডেলি-হ্যারিস এক বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে চিঠিটি প্রকাশ করেছেন।

চিঠির শুরুতে “মাননীয় প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা” সম্বোধন করে লেখা হয়েছেঃ আমরা নোবেল পুরস্কার বিজয়ী, নির্বাচিত কর্মকর্তা, ব্যবসায়ী ও সুশীল সমাজের নেতার পাশাপাশি বাংলাদেশের বন্ধু হিসেবে লিখছি। ১৯৭১ সালে স্বাধীনতার পর থেকে আপনাদের জাতি যেভাবে প্রশংসনীয় অগ্রগতি অর্জন করেছে আমরা তার প্রশংসা করি।

কিন্তু, সম্প্রতি বাংলাদেশে গণতন্ত্র ও মানবাধিকারের প্রতি যে হুমকি দেখেছি তাতে আমরা গভীরভাবে উদ্বিগ্ন। আমরা বিশ্বাস করি যে, আসন্ন জাতীয় নির্বাচন অবাধ ও সুষ্ঠু হওয়া এবং নির্বাচনে প্রশাসন দেশের সব বড় দলের কাছে গ্রহণযোগ্য হওয়াটা অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। আগের দুটি জাতীয় নির্বাচনে বৈধতার অভাব ছিল।

বর্তমান প্রেক্ষাপটে মানবাধিকারের প্রতি যে হুমকি আমাদের উদ্বিগ্ন করে তা হলো- নোবেল শান্তি পুরস্কার বিজয়ী প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসের মামলা। আমরা উদ্বিগ্ন যে, সম্প্রতি তাকে টার্গেট করা হয়েছে। এটা ক্রমাগত বিচারিক হয়রানি বলেই আমাদের বিশ্বাস। এর আগে ৪০ জন বিশ্বনেতা তার নিরাপত্তা এবং স্বাধীনতা নিয়ে উদ্বিগ্ন হয়ে আপনার কাছে যে আবেদন করেছিলেন এই চিঠিটি তার উপর ভিত্তি করে গড়ে তোলারই চেষ্টা।

আমরা বিনীতভাবে অনুরোধ করছি যে, আপনি অবিলম্বে অধ্যাপক ইউনূসের বিরুদ্ধে বর্তমান বিচারিক কার্যক্রম স্থগিত করুন।

তারপর আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে স্বীকৃত আইন বিশেষজ্ঞদের ভূমিকা রাখার সুযোগ সহ আপনার দেশের মধ্য থেকে নিরপেক্ষ বিচারকদের একটি প্যানেল দ্বারা অভিযোগের পর্যালোচনা করা হবে। আমরা নিশ্চিত যে, তার বিরুদ্ধে দুর্নীতিবিরোধী এবং শ্রম আইনের মামলাগুলোর যে কোনও পুঙ্খানুপুঙ্খ পর্যালোচনার করলে তিনি খালাস পাবেন।
আপনি জানেন যে, ‘কীভাবে সামাজিক ব্যবসার মাধ্যমে শূন্য দারিদ্র্য, শূন্য বেকারত্ব এবং শূন্য নেট কার্বন নিঃসরণ আন্তর্জাতিক অগ্রগতির জন্য একটি শক্তি হতে পারে’ এ নিয়ে প্রফেসর ইউনূসের কাজ আমাদের সকলের জন্য অনুপ্রেরণামূলক।

সাম্প্রতিক দশকগুলোতে বাংলাদেশ এবং বাংলাদেশিরা কীভাবে বৈশ্বিক অগ্রগতিতে অবদান রেখেছেন তিনি তার একটি প্রধান উদাহরণ। আমরা আন্তরিকভাবে কামনা করি তিনি যেনো নিপীড়ন বা হয়রানি মুক্ত হয়ে তার উদ্ভাবনী কর্মকাণ্ড চালিয়ে যেতে সক্ষম হন।

চিঠির সমাপ্তি টানা হয়েছে এভাবে “আমরা আশা করি, আপনি এই আইনি সমস্যাগুলোর সমাধান একটি সমীচীন, নিরপেক্ষ এবং ন্যায়সংগত পদ্ধতিতে নিশ্চিত করবেন। এর পাশাপাশি আসছে দিনে একটি অবাধ, সুষ্ঠু এবং অংশগ্রহণমূলক জাতীয় নির্বাচন এবং সব ধরনের মানবাধিকারের প্রতি সম্মান (প্রদর্শন) নিশ্চিত করবেন। সামনের দিনগুলোতে কীভাবে এই বিষয়গুলোর সমাধান করা হয় তা ঘনিষ্ঠভাবে নজরে রাখার জন্য আমরা বিশ্বের লাখ লাখ উদ্বিগ্ন নাগরিকদের শিবিরে যোগ দেবো”।

Global Leaders and Nobel Laureates Call for Ending the Persecution of Muhammad Yunus

For the last 13 years, the government of Bangladesh under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been persecuting Nobel Peace Prize laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, as part of a much broader assault on human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in Bangladesh. In March, 40 global leaders signed a letter asking the Prime Minister to stop this senseless campaign against one of its most accomplished and admired citizens. With a trial of Professor Yunus now underway, and due to resume August 31, more than 160 global leaders including more than 100 Nobel laureates have signed a new letter calling on her to desist. That letter with all the signers listed is below. A related news release has been issued. Citizens around the world are being asked to join this campaign by responding to its call to action. This letter, which was done in solidarity with 34 courageous Bangladeshi leaders who issued their own statement of support, will be published as a full-page ad in the international edition of the New York Times on August 31, just as Professor Yunus’ “trial” resumes.

Dear Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,

We write to you as Nobel Prize laureates, elected officials, and business and civil society leaders, and as friends of Bangladesh. We admire how your nation has made laudable progress since its independence in 1971.

However, we are deeply concerned by the threats to democracy and human rights that we have observed in Bangladesh recently. We believe that it is of the utmost importance that the upcoming national election be free and fair, and that the administration of the election be acceptable to all major parties in the country. The previous two national elections lacked legitimacy.

One of the threats to human rights that concerns us in the present context is the case of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus. We are alarmed that he has recently been targeted by what we believe to be continuous judicial harassment. This letter attempts to build upon an earlier appeal to you by 40 global leaders who were concerned about his safety and freedom.

We respectfully ask that you immediately suspend the current judicial proceedings against Professor Yunus, followed by a review of the charges by a panel of impartial judges drawn from within your nation with some role for internationally recognized legal experts. We are confident that any thorough review of the anti-corruption and labor law cases against him will result in his acquittal.

As you know, Professor Yunus’ work, which has been inspirational to all of us, focuses on how social business can be a force for international progress resulting in zero poverty, zero unemployment, and zero net carbon emissions. He is a leading example of how Bangladesh and Bangladeshis have contributed to global progress in recent decades. We sincerely wish that he be able to continue his path-breaking work free of persecution or harassment.

We hope that you ensure the resolution of these legal issues in an expedient, impartial, and just manner while also ensuring a free, fair, and participatory national election in the coming months, and respect for all human rights. We will join with millions of concerned citizens around the world in closely tracking how these matters are resolved in the days ahead.
